*Note: OSHA standards are available free on the OSHA website. The most relevant standard for comparison purposes is
here: https://www.osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owadisp.show_document?p_table=STANDARDS&p_id=10624. The PSAI's ANSI
standards are available to Members free in the Members-only section of www.psai.org. Copies of ANSI/ASSE A10.25-2017
can be purchased from ASSE for $140 here: http://www.asse.org/ansi/asse-a10-25-2017-sanitation-in-construction/
Implications
Both ASSE and the PSAI are nonprofit trade associations trying to do good work
and make life better for employees on construction sites. It is encouraging that
the two organizations agree on so many points without having had access to one
another's standards in the past. It is also helpful to know that the PSAI may have an
ally in addressing the OSHA standards, which are clearly lagging with respect to
sanitation.
It will be important for the two organizations to work together in the future to see
where we can improve alignment on the standards. Meanwhile, portable sanitation
operators can take two things away from the knowledge that ANSI/ASSE A10.25-
2017 and ANSI/PSAI Z4.3-2016 are both available.*
• The trade associations concerned with safety and sanitation are in agreement
that no fewer than 1 restroom per 10 workers is acceptable to maintain health
and safety on a worksite.
• Superintendents and general contractors may believe they are "meeting
standards" when they cite OSHA or ANSI/ASSE standards that are looser than
the PSAI's. This is a great opportunity to show them ANSI/PSAI Z4.3 and
educate them about why these higher standards are more applicable.
