As the voice of the US standards and conformity assessment system, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) empowers its members and constituents to strengthen the US marketplace position in the global economy, while helping to assure the safety and health of consumers and the protection of the environment. ANSI oversees the creation, promulgation, and use of thousands of norms and guidelines that directly impact businesses in nearly every sector: from acoustical devices to construction equipment, from dairy and livestock production to energy distribution, and many more—including sanitation. Through its relationship with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), ANSI is also actively engaged in global standards programs such as the ISO 9000 (quality) and ISO 14000 (environmental) management systems. Many trade associations work with ANSI to set standards in their areas of expertise. Why do the ANSI standards matter to the portable sanitation industry? The PSAI is an ANSI member, and takes a role in developing and maintaining the standards for our industry. We do this because: • Sound standards created through the ANSI- required stakeholder involvement process give our industry credibility. Citing an ANSI standard also gives YOU credibility when you talk to customers about the number of units or amenities they need. • If associations and other private sector groups do not step forward to develop necessary standards, then governments—possibly without the involvement of industry experts—will meet that need with a regulation. We believe it is better for portable sanitation leaders to drive the effort. • On the other hand, if industry does the work of developing standards using ANSI's process, in many cases governments will use those standards as guidelines in creating regulations when they are needed. This helps raise the standards while saving the government time and taxpayer money. Everyone wins.
