The PSAI strongly recommends that Members have a company safety policy that includes applicable requirements for
meeting federal and state regulations for managing equipment and applicable personnel.
Being proactively compliant will avoid workplace incidents and accidents, as well as DOT violations that could result in
fees, or even civil or criminal penalties. In addition, if you are found in violation during an investigation, there may be
additional costs for required seminars, lost worker time, or accidents that could have been avoided.
Why is this applicable to our industry?
The US DOT requires that all commercial motor vehicles with a gross weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more undergo
an inspection every year. This is conducted in order to make sure all parts and accessories of the vehicle are in good
working order. DOT inspections must be up to date regardless of the product hauled—even water. A specification
plate will have information about the manufacturer, capacity, and construction material—and describes the tank, not
the content.
