More progress toward ending open defecation
India's goal of becoming free of open defecation by
October of 2019 is inspiring companies outside of
the sanitation industry to build toilets. Ramdas Mane
is using thermocol with cement coating to build
units, each taking about two hours to complete. Hi s
company, Mane Group of Companies, creates
thermocol machines and supplies them to nearly 45 countries. And he has now supplied 22,000 portable
toilets across India. "We also give these as wedding gifts to girls who don't have the capacity to build
toilet s, and have given them to 25 girls till now", Ramdas said. It's not your typical wedding registry item,
but when the alternative is open defecation, it brings more harmony than a kitchen appliance.
