WEEKLY EDITION March 7, 2018 Putting the "Special" in Your Events By Karleen Kos, PSAI Executive Director If you have been in the industry for more t han 15 minutes you know that events are one of the main revenue drivers for most portable sanitation businesses. Unless your company is located on the moon, you probably have competitors bidding for most contracts – so how can you make sure your company st ands out for the right reasons? First of all, it's important to get the basics right. The PSAI offers a training course called, "Portable Sanitation and Special Events" which covers things like effective bidding, managing customer expectations, site set u p, servicing, and trouble shooting. It's being offered free to attendees of the Convention and Trade Show in Portland. Let the office know if you want to attend and haven't yet signed up. This course is a great place to start. Once you have your feet on t he ground, the savvy portable sanitation operator is always looking for ways to go beyond – to keep your current customers happy and win new ones. Here are some of the best ideas that have come out of recent roundtable discussions on this topic. Winning New Business • Do a thorough inventory of all events that are offered locally. If you've lived in the same area for a long time, you probably have a good sense of this – but if you live in a populated area there may be many you don't know about. Use Google, watch the websites and Facebook pages for local newspapers and radio stations, and check with government authorities on permits. Odds are good you'll find out about all sorts of things that have slipped below your radar or that are right on the edge of you r service area. • Engage your staff in reconnaissance. When they are not at work they probably attend a lot of the events – or they know people who do. What can you learn about them? Find out what attendees' experiences have been and look for ways to make it better. • Create a master calendar so you know when events are occurring in your market, then reach out to the planners periodically.
