WEEKLY EDITION November 29, 2017 Building a Culture of Safety Part I: Precursors to Serious Incidents By PSAI Executive Director Karleen Kos Whether you've been in the portable sanitation industry for three months or three decades, you know there are things that can threaten your business. Some of them are mostly out of your control – like the broad economic picture or major changes in environmental regulations. Many are mostly within your control, and that's the good news. Through the decisions you make and the culture you create, you can have a substantial impact on whether your business thrives or is brought down by these things. One of the biggest items in this category is safety. In this article, the first in a series on building a culture of safety at your company, we're going to take a look at whether there are things – beyond the obvious like failing to wear PPE or walking into moving traffic - that can help you actually predict whether a serious safety incident is likely. Spoiler alert: there are. Awards Season is On Its Way! Nominate a deserving portable sanitation professional by February 2, 2018 As a trade association, one of the PSAI's main responsibilities is to set standards for the portable sanitation industry. When a select few individuals exceed the expectations of these standards, it is important that we take the time to recognize them each year. In order to do so, the PSAI has created three prestigious awards. The PSAI Service Technician of the Year Award, the MZ "Andy" Gump Award, and the Flay and Glenda Anthony Volunteer of the Year Award honor individuals or groups in three separate categories who play an integral role in our industry's success. This is where you come in. The PSAI Awards Committee relies on our Membership for recommendations. Each award is given to an industry professional that has gone above and beyond in the eyes of their peers. Let us know what you've seen! Read more about each award (starting on page 5) and consider nominating someone from your company or from your circle of business associates. Read quotes from previous winners (on pages 5-6) to understand how gratifying it is to be recognized for your hard work by the people you respect. Consider filling out a nomination form today.
