Prior to working for EPA he was an attorney with the State of Minnesota. He earned his BA in Criminal Justice and Political Science from Gustavus Adolphus College and his JD from William Mitchell College of Law. In his current position, i t is his responsibility to oversee all federal environmental criminal investigations in the State of Minnesota and western Wisconsin. In the words of Mr. Lundeen, "T hough the vast majority of businesses go to great efforts to comply with and/or exceed en vironmental standards, there are always a few that do not believe the rules apply to them. Those are the cases we investigate – where there are knowing intentional violations of the law." He sees it as part of his role to help ensure there is a level playi ng field for businesses to operate by holding those who knowingly violate environmental laws accountable. As mentioned on page 1, a company within the portable sanitation industry has recently been investigated for the illegal discharge of septage. This h as generated interest in this particular environmental crime among PSAI Members. Although Mr. Lundeen will discuss criminal investigations involving media that may not directly apply to portable sanitation, he does plan to go into detail on a few cases whe re companies have been found criminally liable for illegal discharges. His session will also cover the factors that the EPA looks for when determining whether to proceed with an investigation. Through this session, Mr. Lundeen will educate PSAI Members on what qualifies as an environmental crime worthy of investigation in order to reduce future illegal actions in our industry. This should also give PSAI Members a better understanding of what action to take if they know of an environmental crime that is taki ng place within the industry. We are excited to have Matt Lundeen as a part of our program this year and look forward to benefiting from his relevant session! Continue onto page 5 for more Nuts and Bolts program information.
