WEEKLY EDITION September 27, 2017 New ASSE Standard for Sanitation on Constr uction Sites Complements and Contrasts the PSAI's Standards By PSAI Executive Director Karleen Kos The American Society for Safety Engineers (ASSE) recently updated its ANSI standard for Sanitation in Construction. The new standard, known as ANSI/ASSE A10 .25 - 2017, was released in July, both complementing and contrasting with the PSAI's standards. As in its past editions, the ASSE standard addresses potable water, toilets, and general hand washing facilities on construction sites. The updated ASSE standar d is one of a series of safety standards that has been created by the ASSE Accredited Standards Committee on Safety in Construction and Demolition Operations. The series – including A10.25 – has been around for many years. Other standards in the series pub lished by ASSE cover topics such as scaffolding, excavation, hot mix asphalt facilities, and emergency procedures for construction sites, among many others. Although ASSE has used the ANSI - mandated consensus process for developing and updating the A10.25 standard on sanitation, the PSAI was not involved in the process – probably because both ASSE and the PSAI were both unaware the other was writing a similar standard. As mentioned in that article, the students of his "Attracting and Retaining Talent" course will present Part II of t he session with Dr. Henderson, reporting the findings of a semester - long research project. This project will result in a report that focuses on three common roles in the portable sanitation industry: service technician, mechanic, and outside sales. Their p roject will provide insight on attracting and retaining candidates for each of these positions. In order for Dr. Henderson's students to truly dive into the portable sanitation industry, they had to gain a better understanding of what PROs actually do . F or this reason, the class visited both On Site Sanitation in Little Canada, Minnesota (pictured above, top) and Biffs Inc. in Shakopee, Minnesota (pictured above, bottom) earlier this week to witness their daily operations and tour the facilities. They als o had the opportunity to speak with employees in the three roles that their report will focus on. To read more about Dr. Henderson's impressions of the day and to hear from Molly Leonard (On Site Sanitation) and Derek Pauling (Biffs, In c.) about the experi ence, continue onto the next page.
