W EEKLY EDITION SEPT 13, 2017 Leading the PSAI into the Future ...continued By Karen Holm, Past President By now I hope you're thinking, "Hey, maybe I could do that. But I don't know. What woul d I be committing to do? What is required of a Board Member? Here are the most important things: • Time and Travel Board terms are three years. New Board members would be seated on March 22nd, 2018 at our annual Convention and Trade Show in P ortland, O regon. Physical attendance is strongly encouraged at our Convention and Trade Show, our Nuts and Bolts conference as well as one annual destination Board meeting. Actually "strongly encouraged" is a nice way of saying, "required unless you are deathly ill or have been snatched by alien s." A key part of leadership is showing up. In addition, there is also a monthly one to two hour teleconference Board meeting for which you would need to prepare, call in, and participate. Board members are encoura ged to be active and engaged in PSAI committees. You may actually be asked to chair one of the many committees of the PSAI. • Experience and Training Prior Board experience is not necessary. Our Executive Director Karleen provides new Board Directors wit h all the information you will need. A new Board Director Orientation Session is held prior to your first Board meeting at our Annual Convention and Trade Show. The purpose of this session is to introduce newly elected Directors to sitting Board Direct ors as well as bringing new Directors up to speed with what their Board commitment means, where we are going as an association and how we plan on getting there. • New Ideas, Faces and Voices While we honor the PSAI's history, we also understand that yest erday's solutions may not meet tomorrow's needs. Governance is the act of steering an organization to a desired future. While a rear view mirror is essential for safe driving, it is for good reason that the front windshield is much larger! We are very f ortunate to have many second and third generation led companies as PSAI Members. It is these generations that will be most impacted by future regulatory changes that may be coming to our industry. It is vital that we have leadership that will stay on to p of what is happening internationally in issues that will affect the portable sanitation industry and help discern how the issues impact Members whether they are a small, medium or large company or a supplier to the industry.
