W EEKLY EDITION SEPT 13, 2017 Leading the PSAI into the Future ...continued By Karen Holm, Past President So all that sounds wonderful and yet, I am sure, you're wondering, "If I'm going t o give up time and energy away from my company and family, what – besides the satisfaction of serving – is in it for me? How do I justify it? To you I would say, "You'll get a lot out of the experience." Personally I have gained and learned a great deal th rough my service on the PSAI Board. • Pride When I began my second term as a PSAI Board Director, it was at a very low point in PSAI history. I am proud to have played a small part in leading the PSAI to be the well organized, professionally staffed, t ransparent, financially h ealthy, portable sanitation industry advocate and member success - driven organization that it is today. • Knowledge of Board Governance I learned that an effective Board operates by providing strategic leadership, making sound po licy decisions, overseeing and monitoring organizational performance, and ensuring overall accountability for the health and well being of the organization. This is knowledge that helps me in all aspects of leadership. • It takes a Team Helen Keller sai d: "Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much." Over my two terms of serving on the Board, I have had the great privilege of serving with so many talented, amazing, thoughtful, hardworking people that have gone above and beyond for the good o f the PSAI and the portable sanitation industry. Working with others to achieve a common goal is truly satisfying and leaves you with a great sense of accomplishment. • Confidence Serving on the Board of Directors has been one of the best experiences of my working career. It has allowed me to step out of my comfort zone - actually way, way out of my comfort zone. It has sometimes not so gently nudged me to do things I never thought I could do, such as speaking in front of people on a podium or sharing my thoughts and ideas in front of industry professionals for whom I have the greatest admiration and respect. Fortunately for me PSAI Members are the nicest, most understanding people you will find anywhere in the world. They have always been both under standing and gracious as I have given my best effort.
