W EEKLY EDITION AUG 2, 2017 Meet Our 2017 Nuts and Bolts Keynote Speaker! ...continued Dr. A. Robert (Bob) Rubin, Professor Emeritus at North Carolina State University, will kick off the show with his piece on "Environmental, Health, Land Use, and General Manageme nt Trends Affecting the Portable Sanitation Industry." Dr. Rubin began his work in the NC State Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering in 1978. Although he retired from the university in 2004, in his time there he conducted "one of the mos t dynamic and far reaching programs in wastewater management and biosolids recovery/disposal in the United States." He led training efforts for operational personnel, regulators, and government officials in wastewater management and was invited to address Congressional committees on both wastewater management and rural water quality. Since his retirement, Dr. Rubin has remained extremely involved in both US - based and international projects relating to sanitation and wastewater. In 2003, he was awarded the "Bronze Medal for Commendable Service" by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for his work in enhancing the performance and reliability of wastewater treatment systems. He was asked to give the keynote speech at the 2007 International W ater Congress in Spain, which acted as the prelude to the 2008 International Year of Sanitation. Today, he continues to offer consulting services and visit scientists w ith the USEPA. He is currently engaged with two International Standards Organization (IS O)/American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standard setting projects dealing with Sustainable Non - sewered Sanitation Systems and Community Scale Sustainable Sanitation Treatment Systems. (The PSAI is also involved with both of these projects.) His Nu ts and Bolts session, titled "Environmental, Health, Land Use, and General Management Trends Affecting the Portable Sanitation Industry," will highlight how portable sanitation and waste management systems influence each other. No matter how a PRO disposes of and treat waste, there are less - than - ideal parameters that they will face. Dr. Rubin will cover some of the issues with current waste management systems; specifically those that af fect our industry. This way, attendees will be better able to prepare fo r what lies ahead. We are excited to have Bob Rubin as a part of our program this year!
