W EEKLY EDITION JULY 19, 2017 Time For a Change …continued World Portable Sanitation Day is now November 19. Here ' s why. The PSAI considered the suggestion and agreed that, by changing the date to November 19 and coinciding with World Toilet Day, Wor ld Portable Sanitation Day would have the potential for exponential international growth. The change would also aid our PROs here in North America. By originally selecting August 15 for WPSD, the PSAI hoped to capitalize off of the PRO's "busy season" – wh en portable units are in high demand and can be seen all across the country. However, because these Operators are often preoccupied with said busy season, they do not always have the time to organize a World Portable Sanitation Day event in their community . November poses a more appropriate time of year for such an initiative. Our Members will begin to feel their schedules lighten – and portable units will still be scattered throughout the U.S. and Canada before winter weather fully sets in. This change in date is important to the WPSD effort as a whole. To affect the general perception of portable sanitation, this initiative calls for an "all hands on deck" approach. By placing the day of celebration in line with an international day of sanitation recognit ion, and by allowing more Operators to be a part of it, the PSAI hopes to raise WPSD to new heights. Which is why this year, in conjunction with World Toilet Day, the PSAI will hold its first ever Urgent Run. The Global Urgent Run is a 5K race that is hel d annually on or near World Toilet Day and has been initiated by the World Toilet Organization. 2016's Global Urgent Run was held in New York City, while 2017's will be held in Singapore. For those who are not conveniently located near the nationally organized race , however, the World Toilet Organization encourages they host their own Urgent Runs in their own cities. While our run will be held two weeks prior to World Portable Sanitation Day/World Toilet Day, it will be in conjunction with the PSAI's Nuts and Bolts Educational Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota. With so many of our Members together in one city, it seemed appropriate to kick off the celebrations a bit early. In time, we hope to see PSAI Members use the Urgent Run as a way to plan a WPSD celebration in their own community. More information on the PSAI's Urgent Run will be posted in Association Insight as we approach Nuts and Bolts 2017. If anyone has questions regarding World Portable Sanitation Day, the Urgent Run, or World Toilet Day, feel free to reach out to Karleen at karleenk@psai.org . We look forward to witnessing the affects that these changes will have on portable sanitation and global sanitation in the years to come. PAGE 4
