Festival Fueled by Potty Power Urine collected from a portable restroom unit at the Glastonbury Festival in England will power informational displays that feature festival updates. While "Pee Power" sounds like something out of a spoofed superhero comic, it is actually the latest work of scientists at the Bristol Bioenergy Centre BBiC in the Bristol Robotics at the University of the West of England. The urine - powered energy is far fr om a comedic joke, considering it "has already been shown to be capable of powering lights and charging mobile phones." Although the energy source will truly be put to the test this coming weekend at the Glastonbury music festival in Somerset, England. A 4 0 - person Pee Power urinal will be set up, with all urine deposits going toward powering informational displays that deliver festival u pdates. Those involved in the project will be on hand at the festival, explaining to users how the urinal operates. Their goal is to generate "enough power to charge ten informational panels," which will require over 1,000 liters of urine per day. To create energy, t his urine flows onto stacks of microbial fuel cells, where live bacteria consumes urine for growth and mainten ance. A portion of the energy used for microbial growth is then converted directly into electricity. The most exciting aspect of this technology is that it can "utilize any form of organic waste and turn it into useful energy, without relying on fossil f uels." Because the urinal will be placed in a prime location at the festival, spokesmen for the project are hopeful that "journalists and star performers will want to know more – [they] are confident that the exhibits will be a talking point."
