W EEKLY EDITION JUNE 28, 2017 Dispatch #1 from South Africa …continued Option 1: The contents of the toilet are buried and a tree is planted In order to implement these two disposal/recycling options the project has been divided int o two components. The first component is the rollout of a management contract that includes hiring local labor to undertake the removal of fecal waste from the UD toilet vaults and either burying it onsite with subsequent planting of trees over the disposa l area, or transporting the contents to a central processing plant. Option 2: Decentralized processing and production of valuable end products The second component is the establishment and operation of a fecal waste processing plant utilizing the Black S oldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) Technology. To do this the South African project team engaged with the private organization Biocycle (a subsidiary of AgriProtein) which has been piloting the BSFL technology to process fecal waste for several years. Above: Emptying a urine diversion toilet of solids. Above: Buryin g solids on site and planting trees over the site. The process works like this: The larvae of the Black Sold ier Fly Larvae consume organic waste in order to grow to adult size. The adult larvae are then processed into products such as chicken feed, pet food and oils. The residue can be used as a soil conditioner or converted into biochar. The project team used b usiness modeling and then they drew up a service level agreement to establish a form of public private partnership between the Municipality and Biocycle. The Isipingo Waste Water Treatment Works was identified as a suitable site for the establishment of th e processing plant and construction of the plant began in 2016. Commissioning of the plan t started in November 2016. PAGE 4 Above: Fly breeding. A bove: Black soldier fly. Above: Fly larvae. CONTINUED ON PAGE 5
