Joke of the Week Many years ago a little boy called Sam was playing in t he yard behind his house. During his pretend fighting game, he knocked over the outhouse. Now Sam was upset and worried that he would get into trouble so he ran into the woods and didn't come out until after it got dark. When he arrived back home, his papp y was waiting for him. He asked suspiciously, "Son, did you knock over the outhouse this afternoon?" "No, pappy," Sam lied. "Well, let me tell you a story, " said the father. "Once, when he was a little boy about your age, George Washington received a shin y new axe from his father. Excited, he tried it out on a tree, swiftly cutting it down. But as he looked at the tree, with dismay he realized it was his mother's favorite cherry tree." His pappy paused. Then he said, "Just like you, George Washington ran i nto the woods. When he returned, his pappy asked, 'Georgie, did you cut down the cherry tree?' and young master Washington answered with, 'Father, I cannot tell a lie. I did indeed chop down the tree.' Then his father said, 'Well, since you were honest wit h me, you are spared from punishment. I hope you have learned your lesson though.'" Finishing the story, Sam's father asked again, "did you knock down the outhouse?" "Pappy, I cannot tell a lie any more," said the little boy. "I did indeed knock down the o uthouse." Then his pappy spanked Sam red, white, and blue. The boy whimpered, "But Pappy, I told you the truth just like George Washington! His pappy didn't spank him. Why did you spank me?" Pappy answered, "Because George Washington's father wasn't in the tree when he chopped it down!" © Portable Sanitation Association International (PSAI) • 2626 E 82 n d Street, Suite 175 • Bloomington, MN 55425 www.psai.org • 952 - 854 - 8300 W EEKLY EDITION JUNE 28, 2017 Something In the Water? California passers - by had no idea that the free water bottles on Hollywood Boulevard last week contained local, purified wastewater When imaging Hollywood residents sipping bottled water, you can almost picture a bottle of Perrier or FIJI Water in their hands. However, last Wednesday, as the Orange County Water Dis trict handed out free bottles of water to passers - by on Hollywood Boulevard, those who willingly took a bottle and drank it were "the first in the world to chug purified wastewater sourced from home toilets, showers and sinks." This free water give away is part of the Orange County Water District's yearlong tour, where they will carry "about 16,000 commemorative bottles of highly treated wastewater to tourist spots, college campuses, and local festivals." The hope is to "convince every day Southern Califor nians that water originally flowing from sewage pipes instead of artesian springs is indeed safe to drink once treated." After 10 years of perfecting their treatment process, the OCWD is confident in their three - stage filtration and treatment process. Th ey recycle "100 million gallons per day or 36.5 billion gallons a year… and treating it beyond state and federal drinking water standards." As Denis Wolcott, a OCWD spokesman, explains, "The technology is such that we can take it to the tap… We do not have to go into the ground water." About 2,000 water bottles were handed out to passers - by last week, allowing people to taste the water so OCWD could gauge their reactions. Their next stops include the Orange County Food, Wine and Music Festival, UC Irvine, Cal State Long Beach and Cal Poly Pomona. If residents are able to accept this drinkable alternative, this may be "a way to fend off the effects of future droughts." READ THE STORY
