WEEKLY EDITION May 31, 2017 Progress on New Standards for Non - Sewered Waste Systems Kos represents the PSAI at US Technical Advisory Group Meeting The United S tates Technical Advisory Group (US TAG) to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Project Committee 305 met last week on the campus of Cal - Tech in Pasadena, California. PSAI Executive Director Karleen Kos represented the PSAI as one of ab out a dozen US stakeholders in attendance at the three - day meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to review some 278 comments received from similar TAGs around the world on the draft standard for non - sewered waste systems. The new standard is expected t o enable the development of sanitation systems that promote economic, social, and environmental sustainability through strategies that may include minimizing resource consumption (e.g. water, energy) and maximizing reusable output. Implementation of this I nternational Standard is intended to promote the introduction of sustainable sanitation systems where traditional sanitary sewer systems are unavailable. New technologies, currently under development with assistance from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and its "Reinvent the Toilet Challenge," are in various stages of testing. Information about many of them can be found in Kos' 2016 Nuts and Bolts pres entation located here behind the Members - only pay wall on the PSAI's website.
