W EEKLY EDITION APRIL 19, 2017 In Memoriam: Barry Gump The former CEO of Andy Gump passed away on Monday, April 17 at the age of 74. The Gump reputation in the Santa Clarita area is well known – they are a beloved and respected business in the valley. However, Barry was equally known and beloved for his charitable efforts. According to Santa Clarita Councilman Bob Kellar, who knew Barry for over 25 years, he and his family "have been mainstays of charitable giving in the Santa Clarita Valley." Many recall Barry's involvement at the Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital Foundation's annual tree lighting, whether he was either placing the fi nal light on top of the tree or dressed as Santa for attendees. The foundation's president, Marlee Lauffer explained how "he followed in the very humble and traditional footsteps of his father – doing the right thing because it helps people, not to get any kind of recognition." Local radio station co - owner, Carl Goldman, also knew him well, stating, "Barry was a class act, one of the leaders in Santa Clarita… The Gump family has touched every nonprofit in our community – our thoughts and prayers go out to the family." Barry, who was known for his distinctive voice, hosted a radio show while he served in the Air Force. During that time, he thought he would do something related to journalism when he got out. However, when he came home, his dad asked if he wo uld consider helping him with the business – and he never looked back. Each year, the PSAI honors one of our Members with the prestigious M.Z. "Andy" Gump Award, named after Andy Gump himself. Barry was instrumental in the award's creation in 1993, with the Gump family continuing to sponsor the cost of the distinctive statuette each year ' s honor ee rec e i ves . While the award is granted to someone who upholds the standards exemplified by Barry's father – such as fairness, integrity, leadership, and innovation – these same ideals have often been used to also describ e Barry. At the PSAI ' s Annual Convention and Trade Show last month, a few individuals were standing around talking. They observed that one of the people most deserving of the sort of recognition that comes with the Andy Gump Award was Barry Gump himself. Because he, or a member of the Gump family, has always been on the selection committee for the award , honoring Barry with the award named for his father has not occurred. Barry Gump was a beloved member of our industry and will be greatly missed. Below are just a few comments that have been made by our Members since the PSAI learned of Barry's passing this week: • "We lost a true giant in our industry. Barry was a great businessman, industry spokesman, and gentleman. His inspiration will live on." • "I really feel like I've lost a father fi gure. He was a true mentor to me. We butted heads sometimes, but he was a great man." • "The world lost the most incredible man today, Barry Gump. [He showed] my husband what it means to be a hardworking man, dedicated husband, and loving father. [He] will f orever be in our hearts and will always be on our minds." • "Today we lost [someone] who I will always refer to as the "best man" I have ever known." He is survived by Pati, his wife of 52 years, daughter Nancy Gump Melancon, Andy Gump's current president a nd CEO, and his three grandchildren, Andy, Josh, and Cole. We send our condolences to the Gump family, the Andy Gump staff, and all of those who knew and loved Barry. *Note: Multiple sources were used to compile this tribute. We acknowledge and thank the various media sources for their assis tance. P AGE 2
