News of the Weird: The Lake's Gone Pink
A large lake in the heart of Melbourne, Australia has turned from its usual blue to a distinct shade of hot - pink.
We've been assured there are no science - fiction forces at play –
a lake in one of Australia's largest national parks has turned pink
due to n atural causes. The salty body of water turned pink
because of "the right combination of factors exist: high salinity
and the right salt and organisms." It can happen when "the only
thing living in [the lake] is a single - celled, salt - loving microbe that
mak es pigments called carotenoids."
The lake, which turned pink last week, is expected to return to its normal hue once the weather cools down and
Australia's winter rains roll in around June. It is important to note that a pink lake is entirely different fr om pink water
coming out of a sink tap – which occurred in some areas of Canada just last week. That was "the result of a disinfectant
called potassium permanganate that leaked into the system, not algae, salt or aliens."
For those working in the portable sanitation industry, understanding the effects that various compounds and organisms
can have on water is a common part of the job. It's always interesting to see nature use its own chemicals to cause such
unique changes! READ THE STORY
