CLARIFICATION
A note on last week's industry news piece titled "Placing Portables in Nonsewered Areas Doesn't 'Do the Trick'"
Each week the Association Insight publishes links to stories about portable sanitation that are in the news around the world.
Out of the dozens of stories that come to our attention weekly, we highlight items that are relevant to the mission of the
Association and the work we are doing co llectively.
From time to time, the stories to which we link may involve, directly or indirectly, a portable sanitation company or a suppl ier.
Be assured the story is being carried because we believe its presence in the media has made it newsworthy - and w hatever
the story says is being communicated far and wide whether the PSAI carries the story or not. Our role is to let you, the
Members of the PSAI, know what is being said about our industry. These items are produced by other publications, so we do
not c ontrol the content.
Last week, in this section, we carried a story about dissatisfaction with portable units in India. Read it here . In our work with
the International Standards Organization (ISO), the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), and the Bill and Melinda
Gates Foundation, we have heard of instances in several places (India, South Africa, Nepal, and Senegal, to name a few)
where portable sanitation has been offered by the governments of those nations in place of more permanent sanitation
s olutions. Many citizens prefer open defecation to portable units, and in multiple locations there has been pressure on the
government to provide better long - term sanitation options. That is one of the reasons the PSAI is involved in the
development of new global standards for nonsewered waste systems - a topic covered extensively in a presentation at the
2016 Nuts and Bolts Educational Conference (see the slides from the presentation on the PSAI website here ). The fact that
we carried this story from anothe r source, and its connection with the PSAI's work in the global standards arena, should not
be construed as an Association position on the content of the article. We regret any confusion this may have caused.
The PSAI, as a trade association for the entire industry, does not endorse nor oppose any company's products or operations.
We carry out our mission on behalf of everyone.
