2017 Construction Forecast …continued Part 2 of a series on trends affecting the portable sanitation industry this year. The group predicted 2016 would end with about 5% growth in nonresidential construction between 2015 and 2016. While the data is not yet in, anecdotal evidence suggests they were fairly close in their forecast. Whether their prediction of "mid - single digit growth" for 2017 over 2016 levels will turn out to be accurate remains to be seen, but it is a good place to start our estimates for 2017 . 2020 Vision Alex Carrick, Chief Economist with ConstructConnect, reported the ConstructConnect/Oxford Economics construction forecast through 2020 as "restrained and conservative" with a value of construction star ts growing about $25 billion in 2017 over 2016 levels. For US construction, all three major construction categories – overall construction, nonresidential construction, and residential construction – all slowed down between 2015 and 2016. In fact, 14 of 16 construction subcategories showed declines. As of November 2016, the ConstructConnect/Oxford Economics forecast for 2017 was showing a predicted 6.8% growth over 2016 and 6.2% growth in 2018 over 2017. From there, though, the picture is one of rather steep declines, with 2019 slowing to 4.3% growth over the prior year and estimates for 2020 at only 3.7%. While a lot could change in the next three years, it's important to keep in mind that growth in architecture projects has already slowed down. Wise planners in the portable sanitation industry will take note of the projected slowdown in construction growth by 2019 and 2020, planning their company expansions or capital expenditures with this information in mind. Watch Association Insights next week for additional information about projected construction trends and the overall economy in the post - US election environment .
