All Gender Restroom Law in California has Implications for All Portable Restroom Operators …continued By Karleen Kos, PSAI Executive Director The controversy surrounding North Carolina's transgender bathroom law has resulted in the state losing $600 million to date in canceled conferences, sporting events and concerts. Within the state and elsewhere controversy still rages about this issue – but money talks. We have heard of concerts and other events going forward on the provision that gender - neutral restrooms will be made available. The Target chain has announced that it will be making gender - neutral restrooms a vailable in all its US stores. I t appears likely, then, that having a gender - neutral restroom option will become more commonplace as time passes. On the other hand, it seems doubtful that gender - neutral restrooms will completely replace gender - specific restrooms for a variety of reasons. If we had to guess – and it is only a guess since our crystal ball is broken – we would suppose that over the next several years , gender - neutral restrooms will be a necessary third option in locations of public accommodation. In summary, the issue of gen der - neutral bathrooms remains controversial. However, it probably makes good business sense for portable restroom operators to be aware of the evolving situation and prepare to make adjustments. Even without law changes, changing opinions and economic impa cts may influence what your customers ask for. You'll want to be ready to respond. W EEKLY EDITION DEC 14, 2016 P AGE 2
