W EEKLY EDITION DEC 7, 2016 Student - De veloped Portable Toilet Could Be Worth $1,000,000 A group of students at Boise State University in Idaho has just advanced toward winning the one million dollar Hult Prize award for their POTT (Portable One Time Toilet) idea. Luke Yeates and his team of f ellow Boise State classmates are in the midst of participating in the Hult Prize Challenge. This program is the world's largest student competition where groups of young entrepreneurs attempt to solve the world's toughest challenges. The challenge that the se Idaho residents chose to undertake? Portable sanitation, specifically on refugee camps. According to the team's research, refugees do not like using the common area bathroom in camps because of risk of an attack. When people then decide to "go" in oth er areas, their waste often gets into the camp's water. Because of this "about 90 percent of children under five have chronic diarrhea because they're just drinking raw fecal matter." To address this concern, Yeates and his group developed the POTT – the Portable One Time Toilet – that consists of a double - layered, biodegradable bag. The first layer holds the waste, while an outer, second layer would hold seeds that, in time, wou ld turn into food. This addresses more than just a sanitation issue, as Yeate s's team wanted to develop a product that addresses a way to clean up refugee camps, provides privacy and security when using the restroom, and would potentially grow food. This portable toilet plan just won a local competition that will send the group t o Dubai, London, or Shanghai to compete for the one million dollar award. Yeates explained that "[the POTT] could become a very real thing. We want to make sure we can do it justice and do it correctly."
