"Man On The Street:" Heard at Nuts and Bolts 2016 …continued
The PSAI's Director of Marketing, Rachel Johnson, reflects on how
the portable sanitation industry is potentially harming its own
image – and how it can be stopped!
Along with that, talk to your employees and address any concerns they
may have. They interact directly with users in the field and may have
suggestions of how to garner a higher level of respect from the public that
could be implemented for all PROs. By setting a standard of open
communication, you have the opportunity to express how you would like
your employees to view their role. Many Members expressed the
importance of finding above average employees, and sh ared how much
they appreciated their own men and women who work for them. Share these views with those exact men and women.
Make it clear the level of respect you have for them – and how much respect you want them to have for their essential role.
That be ing said, it also may be beneficial to reflect on how your company is choosing to position itself - and the effects this
may be having on industry perception. It is understandable to use humor as an approach to make light of waste disposal.
However, there is a fine line between humor and mockery . When we make light of our own industry too much, customers
may view that as an invitation to do the same. If users don ' t take us seriously as professionals, this can produce an obvious
lack of respect for the industry as a whole. Encourage your PROs to also tread cau tio usly as they make light of their work .
The majority of the portable sanitation industry is not glamorous; you don't h ave to sell that it is. However, portable
sanitation is necessary and extremely beneficial. There is dignity in performing a role that is essential, especially when ma ny
would shy away from the task. Instill pride in your employees, set the standard of res pect, and stress the efforts being
made to change public perception; your business and this industry will benefit from these small shifts.
