New California Restroom Law May Affect Some Members …continued
As a result of these factors, at least one estimate suggests the new CDL requirement can result in
additional costs of approximately $12,000 per Service Technician per year or $1,000 per month.
Using these numbers as the basis for further analysis, con sider the following. A service technician who
services 50 units in a 10 hour day and run s a 4 - day route, will service 860 units per month (4.3 weeks per
month). Therefore, using $1000 per technician per month as the assumed impact, your increased cost
pe r service would amount to approximately $1.16. As an operator, you will then have to decide whether
to absorb the cost or pass it along to the customer. Of course if your costs are different – for example if
you experience overtime on a regular basis – or if you have trucks that fall below the threshold and
flexibility in your workforce that will allow you to mitigate some of the impact on your operations - you
will have to adjust your assumptions and calculations accordingly.
