WEEKLY EDITION NOV 9, 2016 ANSI Standard Revisions Now Available – Free To Members PSAI is pleased to announce three updated standards are now available free to PSAI Members. The language for the standards was approved by ANSI – the American National Standards Institute -- in May 2016. Since that time the PSAI has been working to get the documents publication-ready. The new standards can be accessed via the Member Portal on the PSAI website www.psai.org. Members should contact the PSAI office for assistance if they need their username and password. Nonmembers can purchase the standards for $35 each via PSAI or ANSI. The updated standards are revisions of existing standards for which the PSAI has served as the secretariat since the 1990s. As secretariat, the PSAI is responsible for administrative duties, maintaining records, and overseeing processes concerning the development, affirmation, and revision of the standards. By definition, a revision of an ANSI standard means the existing standard has been changed in a substantive manner from the prior edition. The PSAI has been working on revisions to these three standards for more than two years. • ANSI/PSAI Standard Z4.1-2016 is intended to present minimum requirements recommended for use by employers, building owners and others concerned with the design and construction of industrial and commercial buildings. In 1979 this standard was approved as an ANSI standard and reaffirmed in 1986, 1995 and 2005. • ANSI/PSAI Standard Z4.3-2016 is intended to present minimum requirements of all devices now available and acceptable for disposal of human waste where lack of water or temporary nature of the installation makes wate r carriage systems impractical. This standard was originally published as U.S. Public Health Services Supplement No. 108 in 1933. It was approved as an American National Standard in 1935, revised and expanded several times over the years including 1979. Reaffirmations were approved in 1987, 1995 and 2005. The PSAI became secretariat for the standard in the 1990s. • ANSI/PSAI Standard Z4.4-2016. This standard prescribes minimum sanitation requirements for temporary labor camps and field work to protect the health and safety of persons residing the camps, in work places or in the vicinity. On March 8, 1968 the standard was approved as an ANSI Standard. In 1977, the standard was reaffirmed. In 1988 the standard was revised, and then reaffirmed in 1995 and 2005. The PSAI became secretariat for the standard in the 1990s. Volunteers on the PSAI's Standards and Guidance Committee have been responsible for the work involved in getting the revisions written and building consensus for their adoption. Some 20-25 people per standard were involved in the consensus groups. The groups included representation from operating companies, manufacturers, distributors, other associations, government bodies, end users, and the general public. This format ensured broad and balanced stakeholder representation throughout the process. The Standards and Guidance Committee is chaired by Tim Petersen (Northwest Cascade/HoneyBucket).
