W EEKLY EDITION JULY 20, 2016 PSAI Philanthropic Alliance: Friends of Ngong Road Mission: providing education and support for Nairobi children and youth Friends of Ngong Road (FoNR), a Minnesota - based 501(c)(3), and Ngong Road Children Association (NRCA), a registered Kenya NGO, operate with the shared mission of providing education and support for impoverished Nairobi children whose families have been affected by HIV/AIDS. By taking an innovative approach to organization and service delivery and recruiting a cadre of highly engaged, talented volunteers, FoNR has demonstrated that its model can help transform the lives of one of the most at - risk populations in the world. Karibu Loo – a PSAI Member In 2013, FoNR set a goal of launching a for - profit business in Kenya. The objectives were to create a stream of income to support the mission of educating children and Nairobi's slums, and to provide employment for graduates of their program. By providing a clean, high quality portable toilet experience – while also allowing clients to know they are acting as responsible corporate citizens by supporting an organization that uses its profits to educa te impoverished Kenyan children – FoNR is creating a susta inable solution that meets both objectives. The initial shipment of 26 portable restrooms , a truck, and an exhauster arrive d in Nairobi in November 2014. During 2015, FoNR conducted a pilot project fo r a portable toilet business branded Karibu Loo. " Kari bu " means "welcome" in Swahili and " Loo " is well - understood in Kenya due to its colonial British past.
