Page 18 PSAI Industry Retrospective - the 00s CONCLUSIONS A Company, Andy Gump, A rone, Northwest Cascade, and SuperBowl Portable Restrooms earned their own Gold Medal for the 2002 Winter Olympics. In the 10 years since this monumental project, there has yet to be another event where coordination overrode competition, where customer service was so challenging, and where there was no opportunity for a second chance. e PSAI was well-served by the success of the Olympics as these Members did an exemplary job. Would this have been conceived of when the Association was formed in 1971? History Of The PSAI: 2003–2012 e recent history of the PSAI can be best summarized by the terms "growth" and "acceptance" – both nationally and internationally. Portable sanitation in the United States is now viable, commonplace, and expected by the general public. On an international level, education and legislation are the driving forces behind the growth in the industry. NATIONAL DISASTER: HURRICANE KATRINA – AUGUST 29, 2005 e most powerful and destructive hurricane on record hit the Gulf Coast in late August of 2005. New Orleans and the Mississippi coast were the hardest hit areas. FEMA employed many PSAI Member Companies to assist in the recovery plans. In addition to portable restrooms, restroom trailers, shower trailers and hand wash stations provided relief to those in need. A PSAI Board Meeting in New Orleans in May 2007 allowed Members to observe the rebuilding efforts some 18 months aer the storm. Even at that point, some areas of the city looked exactly as it did the day aer Katrina had moved on. Long-standing PSAI Associate Member, Keith Huber, lost most of his facilities in this devastating storm. Keith Huber, Inc. did indeed rebuild his truck manufacturing plant and hosted a site visit to their new facilities during the PSAI Nuts and Bolts Meeting in March 2010. THE 2ND AND 3RD FEMALE PRESIDENTS Both "growth" and "acceptance" were exemplified in period of 2006 – 2008, when the PSAI was fortunate to have Karen Holm and Tammy ompson-Oreskovic serve as Presidents in consecutive terms. Not since Dorothy Sansom in 1990, had women held this prestigious leadership position. Both Karen and Tammy were strong and energetic leaders who continue to serve the PSAI as exemplary Past Presidents. In 2012, Karen Holm was once again elected to the Board to serve the Association during a time of challenge and change. INTERNATIONAL BOARD MEETINGS e first International PSAI Board Meeting occurred in September 1992 in Dusseldorf , Germany. Lothar Vermillion was instrumental in planning this meeting and his efforts in assisting the PSAI's expansion in Europe cannot be underestimated. Additional Board Meetings held in Australia, Germany, Ireland, Canada, Barbados and Austria highlight the international growth of the industry. PSAI Member companies are located in each of these locations and site visits are integral parts of these meetings. At the 2005 Toilet World Forum in Shanghai, China, PSAI had a booth at the Expo and Lothar did a presentation on the Portable Sanitation Industry, bringing the message of the association to a vast new market. FIRST INTERNATIONAL PSAI PRESIDENT In November 2010 at the Annual Convention in Daytona Beach, James Elliot of Barbados became the first international President of the Association, and was very popular and successful. During his tenure, he founded the International Committee as a permanent standing committee of the PSAI. With committee members in New Zealand, India, Colombia, and Nigeria, the international focus of the Association is assured and growth is expected. INTERNATIONAL BOARD MEMBERS e PSAI Board of 2011–2012 was composed of three International Members, the most ever. James Elliot of Barbados, Rajeev Kher of India, and Carlos Robles of Colombia worked hard to increase the focus on international membership and growth. LARGEST INTERNATIONAL CERTIFICATION CLASS – MAY 2012 rough the dedicated efforts of Carlos Robles and Flay Anthony, 39 candidates representing Panama, Colombia, Guatemala, Venezuela, and Mexico participated in a PSAI Certification Class taught entirely in Spanish. PSAI President Jeff Wigley was the instructor, and through simultaneous translation, the students successfully completed the course.
