Page 15 PSAI Industry Retrospective History Of The PSAI: The 2000s As the new Millennium dawned, the portable sanitation industry was recognized as an integral part of society. Construction sites, parks, residential home building, and special event venues all were expected, and now legislated, to have portable restrooms. e PSAI's growth in 30 years was steady and strong. International Membership spanned six continents. Restroom trailers, VIP flush units, hand wash sink stations, hand sanitizer dispensers, ADA compliant units, and holding tanks offered customers a diverse product line that was a stark contrast to the wooden units of the 1970s. Were there any other mountains for our industry to climb? Have you ever heard of the Wasatch Front Mountain Range in Utah? 2002 WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES, SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH In 1995, Salt Lake City won the opportunity to host the XIX Winter Olympiad. In 1999, the Salt Lake Organizing Committee (SLOC) contacted the PSAI office, who then contacted Jeff Moore, who recognized the opportunity of a lifetime. Jeff contacted Keith Kennedy at SLOC and began the process of educating his team about the restroom business. At this time, the obstacles seemed like navigating the course on the downhill slalom with all of the twists, turns, bumps, and slippery slopes. Among the challenges: • Mountainous, snow-filled terrain • Sub-zero temperatures • Projected record attendance for a Winter Games • Intense security as 9/11 was less than six months prior to the Games • e need for 2000+ units and countless other pieces of equipment A "Gold Medal" performance would be required by the service company or companies that win the bid for this most special of special events. "PSAI Pioneer" Clyde Samson, owner and manufacturer of PSAI Associate member Synergy World portable restrooms was the catalyst who encouraged Jeff Moore to put together a consortium of Synergy operators to do the 2002 Winter Olympics. is consortium became a legal partnership named A Company 02 LLC. Some might think that geography is not one of the strengths of this collaborative team as evidenced by: A Company – a branch in Salt Lake City but headquartered in Boise, Idaho, 350 miles away Andy Gump Inc – Los Angeles, California 800 miles from Salt Lake City A rone Company – Long Beach, California 800 miles from Salt Lake City Northwest Cascade Inc – Seattle, Washington 880 miles from Salt Lake City SuperBowl Portable Restrooms, Inc – Denver, Colorado 550 miles from Salt Lake City What do these five companies have in common? All are PSAI Member Companies and all owners had served on the Board. (In fact, now all have served as Presidents of the PSAI and all remain active in the Association.) RFP AND THE WINNING BID Discussions began with the Salt Lake City Organizing Committee (SLOC) in August 1999. e SLOC anticipated multiple suppliers for each of the eight venues, had no idea as to the number of units required or quantity of waste generated, did not know the location of local treatment plants, and did not know how to keep waste from freezing. Educating the customer would be vital in this case. Once the five PSAI Member companies formed their team in June 2000, organization was of paramount importance. Company owners, Jeff Moore and Larry Moore, Lee Sola, Mark Perry, Barry Gump, George and Mike Rice devoted their personal time and expertise to meet in Salt Lake many times over the next year, establishing the requirements, labor and resource commitments and pricing. ey all agreed that the team would remain resolute in the joint effort and would win or lose as a team. Aer months of revisions and numerous trips to Salt Lake, this "Gold Medal Team" of owners announced to SLOC that the team had invested significant time and money into the RFP process and it was time to make a decision. e SLOC committee recognized the quality of this team and their plan and on April 4, 2001, the contract was signed! PSAI Standards and data were prominent components of the winning bid.
