11 I PSAI Association Insight, December 1, 2021 Past Presidents Reflect upon the PSAI's Past: Ned Carpenter and Flay Anthony By Jeff Wigley, Past President Anniversary Celebration After they completed their service, they have remained available for advice and consultation to both the current President and the Board. Their years of service and their leadership are invaluable. In these next series of articles, some of our most involved and dedicated Past Presidents will share their stories, their thoughts, and their wisdom with us. Ned Carpenter – PSAI President 1998-1999 Having served on the PSA Board on two separate occasions, in both the 1980s and 1990s, Ned's experience and leadership in the PSAI are well known. His father Reese started Porta-Jon of the Piedmont, Inc., in 1969 when Ned was serving in Vietnam. Ned received a photo showing a portable tank hanging on a rail so that when it was needed to service, it could be lowered into the back of Reese's pickup truck. (continued on page 12) Reese Carpenter Throughout our history, our Past Presidents have been an important part of the PSAI. Each has led the Association and has served in each board position. His brother Keith worked in construction in the Charlotte-Gastonia area while attending Belmont Abbey College and heard the job superintendents complaining about the service from a local operation of Jiffy Johnny out of Atlanta. Ned, along with his then-wife Brenda, typed the invoices after Keith and his wife Sharyn moved away. After Vietnam, Ned worked construction and went to Belmont Abbey and was around many construction sites where he put sales material and talked with job superintendents. Industry pioneer George Harding, partner with industry pioneer Ed Crafton at PolySan, called on Reese Carpenter and became a very valuable mentor to Reese in the portable restroom business.
