Portable Restroom Operators (PROs) along the Gulf Coast and Flori- da are very familiar with the business opportunity a large hurricane will create. This article offers both my firsthand experience in responding to several large disasters as well as some lessons learned from many other industry-leading PROs. While I primarily focus on hurricane response, the same principles apply to fires, tornados, earthquakes, and power outages from freezes. The intent is to assist all PROs as they seek to collaborate, grow, expand, and work together to provide each im- pacted community with the basic dignity of clean sanitation as they recover and respond to each disaster we may face. Portable Sanitation Association International News HAPPY 50TH ANNIVERSARY TO THE PSAI All year we celebrate our 1971 founding! (continued on page 2) (continued on page 15) I The Portable Sanitation Association (PSA) began to slowly but steadily expand in the 1970s, aided by the growth of new technology. Plastic units were becoming increasingly prevalent, improved vacuum technology allowed for more units to be serviced daily, and the deodorizer industry created products that successfully controlled odor in portable units. The founding of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1972, as well as state and local ordinances dealing with portable sanitation on both building sites and public events, brought attention to our industry. Membership grew in the PSA as operators gathered at events and shared information and experiences. Advertising and promotional materials meant that every operator in the US had the opportunity to join the PSA. What was happening in the rest of the world in terms of portable sanitation companies and related associations?
