PSAI Association Insight, September 1, 2021 I 9 restroom units. His objective was to present a visual example of the new product and service his company was offering. We published much more information about this early innovator in the Fathers and Sons tribute found in the June 23, 2021 issue of Association Insight. In addition, Al Hilde of Satellite Industries and Andy Gump of Andy Gump Company were also known for their innovation, construction, and use of wooden restrooms. Their stories are told in detail in the March 3, 2021 issue of Association Insight (Hilde) and on the PSAI's website (Gump). I did find a few references in my research where companies manufactured wood units and sold them to other opera- tors. One company mentioned was Job Johnny, founded in 1963 in Hazelton, Pennsylvania as a part of the Joseph Miorelli & Company which began in 1939. According to a September 28, 1997, article in the Standard-Speaker —the Hazelton newspaper—at one time, Job Johnny had 1,000 wood units. Wooden Portable Restroom Units – A Long History (continued from page 9) They sold the company in 1983. The new owner was Joe Yannuzzi who, as an active PSAI member, served as PSAI President in 1987-88. In 1989 he sold Job Johnny to Browning-Ferris Industries (BFI). In what may be a first for PSAI Presidents, Joe went on to serve as Mayor of Hazelton from 2010-2015. FINAL THOUGHTS: Wooden units laid the foundation for the portable restroom industry we know and love today. The operator trailblazers who designed, built, and serviced their own units to meet the demand of a growing customer base learned a great deal, and taught us all more. It was hard work, but they persevered in their desire to provide a dramatically improved service to the public. We owe these early operators a debt of gratitude. We take so much for granted today. Let us not forget these humble beginnings!
