PSAI Association Insight, July 21, 2021 I 15 Brock Morton Essay (continued from page 14) lined up for people to take a Covid test, get their Covid shot, or pick up donated food; and always highly visible at these outdoor events are rows of portable toilets and restroom trailers. It's such a crazy time in our lives, but not being allowed inside for so many events is opening the opportunity for a portable toilet to be normalized like never before. The negative beliefs that are attached to portable sanitation create a challenge that is not quickly or easily changed. I certainly cannot provide a magic wand that creates an understanding of all the benefits and brings about change in the stereotypes. However, I have a unique view as someone who has never seen the negative side of the industry. If the businesses that provide these services take advantage of our changing world and provide superior products for the public, they can and will diminish the antiquated stigmas. by flood waters. Schools were closed for weeks so I was given the opportunity to work for a construction company repairing flooded homes. Water was shut off to most of the houses where I worked, so portable restrooms and trailers were a necessity. During this time I watched homeowners' appreciation for the portable sanitation industry soar as they were able to utilize portable restrooms and sinks during the reconstruction of their homes. The flooding also caused the contamination of many potable water sources. With a limited supply of clean running water during this time, the conservation of water was a necessity. People became increasingly aware of the amount of water that is saved when a portable toilet is utilized over plumbed facilities. Our world is trying to focus on going "green" and the "green" benefits of products, and this was the perfect time to demonstrate that. Opportunities like these are perfect for the industry to educate the public and increase understanding of how portable sanitation can be environmentally beneficial. Most recently, and surprisingly, is a change that I have noticed in acceptance that has come with the increased visibility of portable sanitation during the Covid pandemic. At the beginning of the outbreak my father told me about instances where factories ordered individual restrooms for each one of their workers. People that never had a need for these items were suddenly overwhelming manufacturers with orders to take care of their employees and customers. Just one year ago I never would have imagined aerial views of cars
