14 I PSAI Association Insight, July 21, 2021 Changing Portable Sanitation into a Respected Alternative in the Minds of the Public By Brock Morton How does an industry work together to change cultural perception? This is a challenging task for portable sanitation providers considering the basic nature of its services. We are fortunate in modern day America to have indoor plumbing in almost every home and public building. The average citizen may have only had to use a portable restroom as an option at an outdoor event and may never have experienced a luxury portable trailer. From my own experiences, the best way to rid the negative stigma that the public may have is by consistently providing top notch sanitation in a portable facility and educating everyone on the environmental benefits of its use. My entire life has been directly impacted by portable sanitation. My father works for an industry manufacturer which has led to me being a part of many work discussions over the dinner table. As a child, I recall my dad always pointing out the plastic toilets on jobsites. He would pull over and take me with him to check to make sure the products were being used and displayed correctly. I grew up without Brock Morton Essay the common aversion to using portable restrooms because he made sure I knew these were sanitary places and it therefore provides me with a unique perspective compared to my peers. I remember as a young preteen participating in a day long lacrosse tournament where there were three options for using the restroom. You could wait in line at a building that had not been cleaned all weekend, you could take a hike deep into the surrounding woods, or you could use any of the portable restrooms set up throughout the complex. I was shocked as I watched families consistently walk past the conveniently placed portable restrooms because they feared they were "stinky and gross." However, I knew better and took advantage of the units and eventually convinced several of my skeptical teammates to give them a try. These types of positive encounters are exactly what is needed for people to change the bathroom humor stigma that so often follows the industry. In September of 2018, Hurricane Florence devastated my home town and surrounding areas. This led to a tremendous amount of homes damaged Brock's father, Corey Morton
