July 21, 2021 FEMA Guidelines Vex Portable Sanitation Providers By Karleen Kos, Executive Director Every so often the PSAI takes a call from a portable sanitation company dealing with a government customer who wants a very low number of units and hand wash stations. Typically the customer will claim the number they seek is "within regulations" or otherwise cite some government source. More often than not, this source is the FEMA Special Events Contingency Manual. It was last updated in 2010, and the recommendations for equipment contained within it have been carried over from previous editions. Here's what you need to know to help your government customers who may be relying on this outdated information. FEMA's Guidelines for Special Events Contingency Planning FEMA publishes a manual for use by anyone planning or conducting a special event or mass gathering. The manual is intended to enable its users to ensure that adequate measures and systems are in place to prevent, reduce, and provide care for injuries, illness, and suffering that may occur. The Revolution and Evolution of Restroom Trailers By Jeff Wigley, PSAI Past President If we were to travel back in time to the 1960s and visit the operations of a portable restroom company, we would see portable restrooms— most built of wood by the company themselves— vacuum trucks, with the vacuum pump powered by the truck's engine, flatbed trailers of some design for delivering larger numbers of units, all tended by an energetic group of employees and staff optimistic that this new industry will succeed.
