the skills of several people. Maybe Mary Jane in the office
isn't ever going to be a sales manager, but she can learn
how to handle certain aspects of customer service or CRM
management that used to be handled by your departing
employee. Perhaps Joe the driver can be groomed for
some lead development. Make sure you reward current
employees for doing more too. You don't want to lose
anyone else!
Above all, remember this. When a key team member leaves,
existing team members look for cues about what they should
do. Sometimes one person leaving opens the floodgates to
others leaving, especially if the company doesn't handle the
departure well or leaves too much uncertainty in how the
workload will be covered. So be sure you are communicating
confidence in how the company will go forward and conveying how much you value those who remain. As Gallup says,
"Who knows? A little extra attention, feedback and praise may be all some teammates need to
become [your] next top performer." v
