system, then the user would be put at ease and eventually
change their perception. Secondly, considering that the
waste must be in some part of the portable toilet for most
of the time, there is no true way to really get rid of the odor
the waste causes. In addition to masking the smell I would
create a pleasing environment when you approach and are
inside the portable toilet—an automated freshening system
that triggered when the door opened, which would change
user's perception that this is not going to be a terrible
experience. Another idea would be to create a fragrance
embedded into the roof of the toilet that let off a pleasing
odor when exposed to sunlight. Lastly, add a wrap on the
inside of a nature or funny scene to distract the user from
looking in the "hole" and feeling the utilitarianism of the
portable toilet.
In conclusion, portable sanitation is not as gross as it used
to be. Advancements in portable sanitation equipment,
like luxury restroom trailers, signifies a big step toward
resolving this negative public perception. However, people
need to feel like a portable toilet is on par with their in-
home bathroom experience to create a different mindset of
portable sanitation as a respected alternative in the minds of
the public. v
