ASSOCIATIONINSIGHT Portable Sanitation Association International News BIWEEKLY EDITION JUNE 9, 2021 Page 4 Get the Message?…continued from page 2 • We need to speak with one voice. Whether the media is paying attention to your company because of shortages or some amazing thing you are doing, it's a win. They are giving your company and our industry free publicity. So make the most of it. Whatever else you might talk about, incorporate some of the key messages we suggest for evolving the industry's reputation from "necessary evil" to "respected alternative." You can't control what they report, but you can control what you tell them. On your materials, website, blog, or press release— you do have 100 percent of the power to decide what you say. In marketing terms, your social media outlets are known collectively as owned media. Owned media provides an even better opportunity to use the PSAI's recommended messages and help move things in the right direction for the whole industry. The PSAI has been working for several years on an overarching strategy for improving the image of our industry. Tragic as the COVID-19 pandemic has been, it has the potential to be a tipping point for portable sanitation. (Bonus points if you've read Malcolm Gladwell's book The Tipping Point, which the PSAI's Education and Advocacy Committee has used for several years to inspire our activities in this regard.) Please join us in making it so. The messages we suggest are on page 5. Print that page and keep it handy. If you work with a marketer or communications consultant, give it to them for use in their work. And if you want to do more to help move the dial on the overall reputation of the portable sanitation industry, contact Karleen to find out how you can help. v Better worksites. Better weekends.
