ASSOCIATIONINSIGHT Portable Sanitation Association International News BIWEEKLY EDITION MAY 26, 2021 Page 8 Industry Pioneer: Harvey Heather…continued from page 7 During his term, Harvey was an ardent supporter of the Association and actively encouraged new membership. As a matter of fact, Art Bereuter also became an active member of the PSA, served on the Board, and became President in 1983–84. Wooden Restroom Trailer Units Always creative and always eager to meet the needs of the customer, Harvey designed a wooden portable restroom that was mounted on a single axle trailer for "mobility of service." We take this concept for granted in today's world, and these units are frequently seen on construction and agricultural sites. In the 1960s, this was a revolutionary concept. The Strongbox Harvey Heather's most memorable contribution to the portable sanitation industry was the development of an iconic unit called the Strongbox. This replacement for the wooden portable restrooms of the day was a rotomolded polyethylene unit in a one-piece shell design. The plastic was thick and rigid, like the walls of the existing wooden units. On December 17, 1976, USANCO was granted a patent for the Strongbox and Harvey began production of this revolutionary new unit in Fort Worth, Texas. In a March 2010 PRO Magazine article, Harvey's son-in-law, Jim Wachsman, and his grandson, Jamie Wachsman of JW Enterprises, gave an excellent description of this unit, touching on its pros and cons as the years and experience had revealed them. Of the many advantages of the Strongbox: • Lighter weight • Easier to clean a plastic surface than wood one • Fewer crevices to clean as opposed to other plastic units with 4-wall construction • Much more wind-resistant • EXTREMELY durable Disadvantages of the Strongbox: • With a one-piece design, a white roof could not be incorporated so units were dark inside. • No grab handles on the unit made for difficult handling. • Shipping large quantities of units was difficult due to the unique design.
