ASSOCIATIONINSIGHT Portable Sanitation Association International News BIWEEKLY EDITION MAY 26, 2021 Page 6 Improved Standards for Portable Sanitations in ISO Standard…continued from page 5 Currently, ISO is urging nations of the world to formally adopt this standard at the national level. The countries that participated in developing it are likely to do so fairly quickly. Other countries did not participate due to lack of funding but otherwise supported the work. They, too, will likely adopt it in the near term. As mentioned earlier in this article, the United States did not participate in development of the standard. Historically, when that is the case there is little motivation to move expeditiously toward adoption here. However, the PSAI is presently in the process of updating ANSI standards that specifically relate to portable sanitation. Considering that this new standard will likely be adopted in many countries around the globe, the PSAI Standards and Guidance Committee can be expected to review it and to consider whether it is appropriate to adopt the provisions that relate to portable sanitation. Even with global support, it is hardly a "no brainer" because conditions differ from country to country—but expect the group to take it seriously and to discuss how these standards would apply. The PSAI and its members owe a debt of gratitude to our colleagues in Europe who worked tirelessly to ensure that ISO/PAS 5643:2021 is a good document for our industry. It could have been a very different outcome, and that would have made all of our jobs much harder. Thank you! v Chris McCarthy Jason Perry Co-chairs of the PSAI's Standards and Guidance Committee Memorial Day Today we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifi ce for freedom. In honor of this national holiday, the PSAI offi ce will be closed on Monday, May 31.
