ASSOCIATIONINSIGHT Portable Sanitation Association International News BIWEEKLY EDITION FEBRUARY 3, 2021 Page 7 Continued on page 8 Vaccine Update: Encouraging Employees to Get Vaccinated A lthough having enough COVID-19 vaccine available for everyone to get immunized at will is weeks or months away, it is not too soon to think about how you will approach it for your team. Here are some tools and ideas that may be helpful to you as you plan how to get your team protected and ready for the post- COVID world. Do Your Homework This video from a recent Sunday Focus segment of NBC's Sunday Day looks at the question of whether employers should mandate that their employees receive the vaccine, what companies are and are not choosing to do so (you may be surprised!), and legal issues involved for both employers and workers. Educate Your Employees The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reported in their monthly newsletter that a new COVID-19 Vaccine Communication Toolkit for Essential Workers is now available. This toolkit is designed to help employers build confidence in their workforce about this important new vaccine. It contains a variety of resources including key messages, FAQs, posters, newsletter content, a PowerPoint slide deck, and more. Employers are encouraged to adapt the key messages to the language, tone, and format that will resonate with their workforce and the industry they serve. With these resources, employers across various industries can easily deliver information about the COVID-19 vaccines, increase awareness about vaccination benefits, and address common questions and concerns. Plan Ahead Whether you mandate the vaccine or make it voluntary, people will need time to go and get their two doses. At this point there isn't a lot of flexibility in how that occurs. The limitations of supply, cold storage, shelf life, and personnel to deliver the vaccine mean that you and your company will likely have to make the adjustments to accommodate vaccine appointments. • Will you give people time off work to get their two doses? Whether you are mandated to allow this and pay for time off remains to be seen. But it isn't too soon to think about how you will adjust routes and otherwise make accommodations for team members to get their shots. • What health and safety precautions will you require after everyone who wants to be vaccinated has been? How will you demonstrate to your customers that your employees are safe to have on their sites? • What will you require of—or what limitations will you place on— employees who are not vaccinated to keep them safe and demonstrate your compliance with OSHA's General Duty Clause as well as any other OSHA guidelines that may be put in place? cdc.gov/coronavirus/vaccines Add one more layer of protection to keep you and your family safe. As essential as you are. THE COVID-19 VACCINE: I GOT VACCINE!
