In this installment of our look-back over the PSAI's history, let's examine how this vital element of our success has been transformed over the life of our industry. In the Beginning During World War II, in the shipyards of Long Beach, California, "temporary toilets" were needed so that the ship builders could use the restroom quickly. This became necessary to maintain the aggressive production schedule that was required to build the nation's naval fleet during the largest global conflict in history. Continued on page 2 2021 Economic Outlook for Portable Sanitation By Karleen Kos, PSAI's Executive Director A t this time last year, no one knew that 2020 would be such a devastating time for public health or for so many industries. In general, portable sanitation was not one of the industries that suffered. Although our industry was knocked for a loop at the beginning of the pandemic, "devastating" does not apply to the financial results for most of our industry colleagues in 2020. COVID-19 precautions and changes in business patterns proved to be a boon for many portable sanitation companies and their suppliers. Even without special event business, the vast majority of portable sanitation companies and suppliers who have talked about their year-over-year results with the PSAI report that they did at least as well in 2020 as in 2019. Many, in fact, grew considerably.
