Scam Alert: The PSAI Does Not Sell Lists!
By Karleen Kos, PSAI's Executive Director
Note: Scammers are still at it this November, so here's the article from October 14 again for your reference.
Have you been getting emails from mysterious people
you've never heard of offering to sell you the PSAI's event
attendee or membership lists? Or maybe WWETT's list? Are
these folks persistent and maybe even a little rude when
you don't respond?
If so, you are not alone.
Offering to sell the lists of associations and events is just the
latest scam out there to get information for identity theft
and other mischief. Don't fall for it.
They Are Conning You
Know this: Our industry and our association are not being specially targeted. Search "Attendee List Sales Scam"
on Google and you'll find plenty of associations whose members are being targeted by criminals to purchase non-
existent and/or unavailable lists. They are targeting anyone whose email they can find—possibly obtained off the
internet or through some sort of data theft. More on what to do about that below.
First, let's talk about the PSAI.
Think about it for a second. When you joined or renewed your membership with the PSAI we asked if you wanted
to allow your information to be shared with the general public through our finder tool so that we can refer
customers to you (check here if you are an operator and here if you are a supplier). The choice was yours—and you
can change it any time.
That same permission allows us to share your basic contact information with other PSAI members. A second
permission question, which you can allow or opt out of, allows us to share your information with nonprofit allies
like the American Rental Association. These relationships enhance your benefits; that's why we offer them.
Beyond these ways of sharing, our policy is simple. We don't sell
our list, period. Sometimes PSAI member companies ask us for a
member list in a special format, and we do charge them for the
time it takes us to create that version of the list. But they are not
getting information that isn't otherwise available to them as fellow
PSAI members.
A nonmember simply cannot get the PSAI member list from us. So
if anybody claims they have it, they are either lying or they stole
the list from someone. To learn more about how we store, secure,
and protect your information check out our policies under "PSAI
Online Data Privacy."
Now, to be fully transparent, you should know that we do allow
event attendees' information to be shared with other event
attendees—including exhibitors—with your consent. Again, you
can withdraw your consent any time. There are upsides and downsides to doing that. We'd be happy to discuss
them with you if you have questions.
