When in doubt about this type of scam, you should
always contact the trade show organizers at the
PSAI, WWETT, or whatever other show you might be
attending. Ask if anyone from the hotel should be
calling or if there is an outside booking representative.
If what you hear doesn't square with the call you
received, pass your intel on to the real organizers so
they can alert others about a possible scam.
In Summary
• When you are registered for a conference or
trade show, engage only with the association or
exhibition firm that is running the event.
• Keep in mind that these legitimate parties might
have your information, but they would probably
not release your personal contact information to
others. Always check their information sharing
policies to be sure.
• Exhibitors might get the contact information for
attendees, which you can opt out of. Most of this
is harmless—maybe even desirable—but that
doesn't mean that scammers posing as list sellers
are innocuous.
• Therefore, don't open their emails or respond to
them. "Just say no," as the saying goes, and go
about your day as usual.
