Then describe the impact of the behavior and why it's problematic. • Engage in joint problem solving. You're more likely to see a shift in behavior if your employee feels as though he's had an opportunity to help come up with a solution. Don't: • Ignore problematic behavior. As a leader, you have a responsibility to help your employees understand the impact they're having on their peers and the company. • Pussyfoot around or try to let them down easy. It's important to be direct when talking about your employee's development and growth. • Get upset. Stay composed during the conversation even if your employee gets defensive and argumentative. The long-term goal is to make all employees more effective and content. If your problem employee succeeds in making a meaningful and positive change, be sure to acknowledge the effort. Take every opportunity to show appreciation and employ positive reinforcement. Titled "Healthy Workplaces—Tips and Tools for Operating Your Business," the session is aimed at decision-makers in non-healthcare workplaces. In the session, NIOSH experts will discuss CDC COVID-19 guidance for businesses and employers.
