The Upside of COVID-19
As many operators have noted, the portable sanitation
industry seems to be holding its own during the COVID-19
pandemic. A central Idaho newspaper caught up with the
owner of Artesian Clean Septic and Pottys who reported
that he has seen an uptick in business over the past eight
months—in everything from renting hand washing stations to
pumping RVs. Custer Septic Service kept busy working with
residential septic systems which have been under more strain
since residents have been spending more time at home.

Portland Residents Protest
Poorly Placed Port-a-Potties
Due to the closing of public restrooms, Portland officials
decided to place more than 100 (red) portable toilets across
the city. Some, however, landed in residential areas causing
local homeowners to raise a stink. One unit was graffitied
with the message "No toilets in front of people's homes."
The city says the placements (mapped online) were chosen
based on homeless encampments and other factors.

Homeless in Wisconsin
Since the pandemic began, more people in Wisconsin
have become homeless. At the same time, many who lack
housing have been reluctant to stay in crowded shelters.
So, since May, the city of Madison has allowed temporary
camps to exist in local parks and provided portable toilets,
hand washing stations, and trash containers. With winter
approaching, however, city officials are thinking of closing
the camps—based in part on the fact that these families and
individuals are not equipped to withstand months of cold
temperatures and snow. It's a serious challenge.
