ASSOCIATIONINSIGHT Portable Sanitation Association International News BIWEEKLY EDITION JULY 22, 2020 Page 20 ADA Compliance 30 Years On…Continued from page 19 Conclusion and Suggestions Although 30 years have passed since the ADA became law, the portable sanitation industry has had a hard time persuading customers to adopt required equipment and on site practices to fully comply. For a number of reasons, there has sometimes been a disincentive for operators to push these issues with customers. These are real issues that our industry needs to explore. The ADA is not going away and is unlikely to have its standards relaxed. Consequently, as stated at the beginning of this article, we need a real dialogue on all of these issues. Someone somewhere may have a suggestion that can be beneficial to others. Here are two ways that can happen: 1. Join us for the virtual roundtable discussion on Thursday, July 30 where we will begin the conversation. It is free to Members, and nonmembers can join for a nominal fee. Visit psai.org to register. 2. Send an email to wjwigley@bellsouth.net or call me at 770-206-0794 so we can organize ideas, comments, and suggestions. These can be used for a follow up story in Association Insight and to guide the PSAI's work. Meanwhile, we suggest operators make themselves aware of the ADA's requirements and factor that in when making future equipment purchase decisions, when advising customers, and when training staff. If you do not have equipment that is strictly ADA-compliant, do the best you can with what you have. Speak with an attorney about how to word your counsel to customers and document the guidance you provide. Depending on the laws in your area, it may be a good idea to have customers sign a waiver acknowledging that you have explained what is needed for ADA-compliance. As with anything, every challenge brings opportunity. We wish you good luck in finding and capitalizing on the prospects in your area. v We are the world's largest trade association serving portable restroom operators and suppliers!
