ASSOCIATIONINSIGHT Portable Sanitation Association International News BIWEEKLY EDITION JULY 22, 2020 Page 15 Manufacturing Trailers Since 1950 We innovate. We create. We design…for you. Restrooms, Showers, Disaster Relief, Specialty Trailers Tony Volpe, Commercial Sales | 705-571-5438 tvolpe@generalcoachcanada.com On May 21, 2020 we were contacted by the FBI as well, and we referred them to our contacts at the Secret Service. Lessons Learned • Test your backups regularly to ensure they are in proper working condition and that real data can be pulled from it. • Use multiple sources of backups including cloud storage and external hard drives. • Have multiple sources of backups, and at a minimum, consider retaining the last two to three days of work. • While there may be a push to move to all electronic records, maintain hard copies as your company may see fit. In our situation, it was our hard copies of data that helped us restore things operationally. • Train employees on how to recognize phishing scams. • Never click on an unverified link, document or attachment from anyone that you do not recognize. • Protect your servers, computers, and other electronics by installing the proper security software and set automatic updates to prevent any lapse in protection. • Create what-if scenarios to make sure all situations are well thought out and have the proper backup functionality in place. • For example, consider how to run your business manually using a paper and pencil method and no computers. • Ensure that your accounts are secured by enabling multi-factor authentication where applicable so that two or more verifications may be needed to log in to an account. This experience has not only been a painful one but an expensive lesson to learn. We are tracking the estimated costs of our expenses in information technology, labor, overtime, lost business, and other relevant costs. Once we have collected this information in full, we will certainly share this information as well. We are happy to talk with any PSAI Member about our experience at any time. v It Can Happen to You…Continued from page 3
