As her appraiser at Arnold's Environmental observed, "Kelsey is an exceptional young woman who will make an impact." Below is Kelsey's essay. A Day along Lake Michigan It's a beautiful summer day in Wisconsin. The perfect day that we wait all winter for. Time to get out and enjoy a local music festival on the shores of Lake Michigan! The warm summer sun and the treat of a cool lake breeze. The whole community comes out for events like this. Local artists, food and beverage vendors, and many children's activities. Being a part of a community sure does make you feel complete. Of course, during all this fun and celebrating, the time does come when nature calls. Time to find the bathrooms. Oh look, over along the edge is a bank of portable restrooms and hand washing stations. The cobalt blue units look so sharp against the blue sky. But wait, aren't portable toilets dirty and smelly? That is certainly what many people still think. Well, time to investigate because nature is calling. Thankfully, these are super clean and fresh smelling. There's even a wall mounted hand sanitizer in each restroom. Looks like there are plenty of them as well for the crowd size. Back when I worked for a portable sanitation company, they would always tell customers that one restroom unit would accommodate about 50 people. This company must follow the same guidelines. As I turned to walk away from the hand washing station, I heard a group of people talking about how clean this bank of restrooms was. I joined in the conversation and as we got talking, we all agreed that portable restrooms play a big role in the health of our earth. Did you know that a running toilet can waste up to 200 gallons of water each day? One of the members in our conversation also worked for a portable sanitation company and she was working on a project to create a more positive impression of portable restrooms. We began discussing ways to open people's minds to the thought of portable restrooms and our most agreed upon answers were to push the benefits for the earth and the importance of keeping the restrooms clean.
