ASSOCIATIONINSIGHT Portable Sanitation Association International News BIWEEKLY EDITION JUNE 10, 2020 Page 15 Continued on page 16 We Want Your Photos! By Todd Ginter, PSAI's Director of Marketing The PSAI has been dabbling with the marketing/social media powerhouse Instagram for the last year and have begun to see its success. While we have been able to post some great content, we are always looking to up our game. That is where you, PSAI Members, come in. More on that in a little bit. First, let me explain why we are looking for your help with Instagram. About Instagram For those of you not familiar with Instagram, it is a social media platform that specializes in having users share photos and videos. Unlike social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, Instagram is driven by high quality and interesting photos and videos. Because of this photo/video focus, it has become extremely popular, not to just teens and those in their 20s, but also to those older than 30 and even to businesses/associations. It is estimated that Instagram users exceeded 111 million at the end of 2019. The take away: If we are not tapping into this market to grow and promote our industry, we are abandoning untold potential for a wider audience. In addition to showing off amazing photos and videos, Instagram is different from other social media outlets in the way people use it. Instagrammers frequently check the site, often many times a day, and engage with posts at a much higher rate than with other social media networks. It's so much easier and fun to peruse photos instead of reading posts like one has to do on Facebook and Twitter. A Sample Case What makes Instagram a success? The sheer love people have for just spending time on it. If the PSAI can use Instagram the right way, we can tap into an engaged, active network of passionate people who are ready to like, comment, and click on posts. Need an example? I give you the American Welding Society. Right now, their Instagram account has more than 183,000 followers and the number is steadily growing. They grew their audience by focusing on one particular aspect of their work that in turn crafts a cohesive feed. For example, while that association offers many services like the PSAI—providing certification, education programs, standards, publications, etc.—their feed is not trying to tell the whole story. They focus the story of their industry by getting people to engage with its members' inspiring work. If you are not yet an Instagrammer, this is a great time to jump in and take a look. Follow the link above to check out American Welding Society's Instagram page. Also, be sure to follow the PSAI while you are there!
