Why America is Losing the Toilet Race?
This article, excerpted from National Public Radio's
Planet Money newsletter, ponders toilets, culture, and
the speed of technology dispersion. The author had
traveled to Japan and fallen in love. As he writes, "But
of all the things I fell in love with, there's one that I can't
stop thinking about: the toilets." He continues, "Japanese
toilets are marvels of technological innovation." They
clean the user and themselves impeccably, use water
efficiently, offer calming noise options and heated seats,
and deoderize the air. U.S. toilets, by comparision, "are
stuck in the age of dirty coal mines and the horse and
buggy." Why doesn't America come into the modern age?
The author concludes that the barrier is "probably not
distance but cultural mores." The Japanese simply value
hygiene and cleanliness more than we do.

DTO GO: So Far, So Good
Launched last October, Orlando's DTO GO pilot
program seems already to be making a difference in
helping the city to stay more clean. Currently the city
is testing two locations for the portable restrooms
and restroom trailers. In the first month of operation,
the units were used about 1,500 times. City workers,
over the same period, cleaned up 50 percent fewer
cases of human waste on city sidewalks. Retailers
and restaurants have also noticed that not as many
non-customers are using their bathrooms since the
program has been in place. Those who have used
the facilities give it high marks as well.
